You're right about Duhamel. He was the editor for Gallimard's
Serie
Noir, and was responsible for both teaching the late Chester
Himes how
to write hard-boiled fiction and in so doing resuscitating
Himes's
career. Many of the Coffin Ed/Grave Digger Harlem novels
appeared in
the Serie Noir before being published in English here in the
United
States.
