Barzun is great at savaging anything he puts his mind to.
However, his targets are not always well chosen, or relevant
to contemporary society. Thus, while his criticism of
education is corrosively on target, his disquisitions on what
is and is not good literature (or literature, period) can be
surprisingly uninformed and even stupid. Still, a guy with
such a reservoir of acid is always worth reading -- a master
of invective.
