Parker wrote a Ph.D. dissertation entitled "The Violent Hero,
Wilderness Heritage and the Urban Reality: A Study of the
Private Eye in the Novels of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond
Chandler, and Ross Macdonald" (Boston Univ., 1970). It's
really pretty good reading, tracing the hardboiled detective
type back to antecedents in 19th-century American literature.
And my memory is that he named Spenser (with an s) after
Marlowe (with an e) playing off the Renaissance
writers.
Cheers,
Jeff
