Gruber's Spanish Prisoner is based on the old scam. It
involves a burnt out former FBI agent traveling through Spain
who receives a letter from a man claiming to be a prisoner in
a Spanish castle. He says his captors are torturing him to
find out the whereabouts of a stash of Spanish gold. The
ex-agent recognizes the letter as a con and tries to find out
who sent it. Through a series of twists and turns, he winds
up being a Spanish prisoner himself. It's typical of Gruber's
last books -- tricky, fast-paced action adventure.
