Finishing HE DIED WITH HIS EYES OPEN, and it's simply a
marvelous book. First in the Factory series of novels, the
nameless Sergeant at the Department of Unexplained Deaths
struggles to figure out who beat an old drunk to death.
Really more of a bleak meditation on existential loneliness
than anything else, it's exquisitely written, surprising in
parts, and oddly rather beautiful in others. Highly
recommended, if you can find it.
Are the other Factory novels this good?
