RARA-AVIS: AGAINST ALL ODDS and other adaptations, and an aside on Hammett a nd other icons.

No. Not at all.

And I keep waiting for the spirit of Kenneth Fearing to rise up and smite all involved with NO WAY OUT (the more recent one).

And the Hammett survey allows me to note that while nobody seems to admire Hammett for drinking himself into nonactivity, nor the accounts of beating Lillian Hellman which were circulated, entirely too many folk seem to think that his similar hb behavior is what's really cool about Miles. Rather as if what was most interesting about William Burroughs was his accidentally murdering his wife.

TM (Genius, however great or slight, doesn't excuse everything, particularly not sycophancy in those who haven't taken a close look at the career of the icon in context of the icon's contemporaries, including the dozens who achieved similar or greater things.

And the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra albums of the 1960s and onward were way the hell better than anything recorded by Davis's groups after IN A SILENT WAY. Try THE NEW CONTINENT or RHYTHMSTICK.)
