I read it man years ago and loved it. In fact it's one of my
all-time favorite PI novels and my single favorite series
cross-over.
Unlike James, I don't think Chet suffers as a character next
to Shell. What disappointed me is that Chet never once made
it outside of the US. I believe DOUBLE IN TROUBLE is the only
novel in the Drum series that is not set, at least partly, in
a foreign country.
Trivia note: Up to this point, Drum's personal weapon was
either a .357 Magnum or a .45 Colt automatic. In DOUBLE IN
TROUBLE he upgrades to a .44 Magnum, which becomes his
signature weapon for the rest of the series. This may be the
first time a fictional detective uses the .44 Magnum, at
least a dozen years before DIRTY HARRY. Interestingly, the
depiction of Drum on the Gold Medal covers always looked a
little like Clint Eastwood to me.
