I've read both his autobiography IN THE ARENA and his actor's
journal THE ACTOR'S LIFE: JOURNALS 1956-1976, and I am an
unabashed fan of both books. I am NOT an unabashed or any
other kind of fan of his politics, but he doesn't venture too
far into them, as I recall, and where he does, he does so
graciously and with an explanation of the journey that
brought him there. Granted, as an actor, I have more in
common with his material than most readers and reading both
books was instructive from a professional viewpoint. But he
writes clearly and seems a genuinely decent man, and he knows
how to tell a story. I recommend both books highly.
