Racing novelist William Murray dies in New York Associated
Press NEW YORK - William Murray, author of a series of
mystery novels set in the world of horse racing, died
Wednesday after a heart attack. He was 78. Murray, a New York
City native who moved to Southern California in 1966, was
back in New York to work on a book on opera and another
involving a racetrack mystery, said Mac McBride, a friend of
Murray and spokesman for the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in
California. Murray's books included
"Tip on a Dead Crab," "Dead Heat," "When the Fat Man Sings,"
"The King of the Nightcap," "The Getaway Blues" and "A Fine
Italian Hand." His novel "The Sweet Ride" was made into a
feature film, and another novel, "Malibu," was made into a
television miniseries. Murray also worked as a writer for
more than 30 years for The New Yorker magazine, mainly
contributing through his "Letters from Italy" series. He is
survived by his wife and three children.
