Thanks for the great comments on tragedy and noir, Kerry. I
see where you're coming from now. You said it the first time
but I was being dense. Although both the tragic and noir
protagonist is doomed, you are saying that the essence of
tragedy is that the protagonist screws himself, and in noir
the protagonist really has no choice in the matter. Are we
talking free will here? I think I could buy into that, Kerry,
but I don't know a darn thing about tragedy. Guess I need to
read a few of the old Greek classics and get a warm
fuzzy.
Speaking of the old Greek classics, I just finished Homer's
ODYSSEY, one of the earlier hardboiled epics of the Western
world. Great story. Lots of fun. OK, a little pompous and
boring in places. Character motivation confused me in places
but that's not unusual for a guy like me.
