Michael, I'm among those that read your very amusing
denunciation of Bruen as a recommendation. I think both of
his series, Jack Taylor and Brant, are great, but if you
didn't like this one, you probably won't like any f those,
since they all have a similar style (though one's in first
person, one in third) and are equally casual in how crimes
are, or are not, solved.
However, if you do want to give Bruen another chance, you
might want to check out his earlier standalones which are far
more traditional. They are what earned him comparison to
Thompson and Goodis. And on my last trip to Borders I noticed
that Serpent's Tail has just reprinted two of those, Rilke on
Black and Her Last Call to Louis MacNamee.
