I read Cain's first four novels back in the late '70s/early
'80s, the Vintage reprints with those great sepia-toned
pesudo-vintage photo covers -- Postman, Indemity, Serenade
and Mildred Pierce. I also picked up Love's Lonely
Counterfeit fromthat series, but still haven't read it; they
also reprinted Butterfly, but I didn't get it (I know it's
not fair to the book, but I couldn't get it out of my head
that it was made into a Pia Zadora movie).
Anyway, I saw another Cain book today -- a Brit reprint of
The Root of His Evil, copyright early to mid '50s. I've never
heard of it; is it any good?
