Holy cow, Miker, your review echoes my own thoughts (not sure
I enunciated them as succinctly when I posted them to this
board back when "Bangkok 8" came out.) almost verbatim.
I was pretty disappointed by the ridiculous ending, though,
and that on and ON about the differences between Thai and
American thinking, to say nothing about the protagonist's
"arhat" status, his blathering about the mystical visions he
had, and having them blend into "reality," etc.
OK, so in retrospect, maybe Miker actually liked it a bit
better than I did.;)

Finished this a few days ago. It started out
decent
and tapered down to mediocre. I grew tired of
the
continuous exposition on the differences between
Thai
and American thinking. Although I didn't know
the
solution to the mystery, I did know exactly what
the
protagonist was going to do about it very early
on.
Another problem I had was that all the
characters
alternated between tough and in-control and
marshmallow, depending on what the plot called
for at
the moment. And the detail of the crime
concerning
the difficulty of drugging the snakes turned into
a
red herring. The ending was cutesy.
It wasn't really bad, but I'm not onboard for
the
next.
