Oh, Dave, in answer to your question about protagonists in
noir who manage to crawl out of the abyss at the last moment
-- look at the tacked-on false, happy endings on many classic
films noir. I always laugh at the end of Pickup on South
Street, when Richard Widmark walks off with the gril who is
going to keep him straight. Yeah, right! What other skills
does this pickpocket have? And while he may have done one
noble act to get a girl, I hardly see it changing his entire
(im)moral compass.
