The only Vachss I've read (False Allegations, if I recall
correctly) was indeed humourless, which I took to be a
failing. It seemed to proselytise for some cure for
pedophilia, which in my books would make it dark, but not
noir. Of course, I may have read the wrong example of his
work.
Someone also mentioned Ross Macdonald as humourless. I'd
agree humour wasn't his strength, but he did allow Archer to
use a self-deprecating humour now and then to hide his
purpose and identity.
