Since there are a number of terrific noir novels devoid of
humor (a few examples: Rex Stout's How Like a God, Seymour
Shubin's Anyone's My Name, Double Indemnity, Postman Always
Rings Twice (sorry, while I found the ending ironic and
tragic, I didn't find any humor in it), David Goodis (Allan
Guthrie disagrees!)), I would have to say no it is not
essential.
