one?
I just read this last week and consider it worth your while.
It's an odd little book that I'm not sure I entirely
understood (is it a parable? an allegory? Vorshtein?) and
most reviews I read thrashed it for similiar reasons. I,
however, enjoyed it. If it came without a cover and someone
told me it was Delillo's follow-up to Running Dog, I would
believe him. It also reminded me a bit of Colin Harrison's
The Havana Room, but that could be due to the mystery element
and rural Long Island setting.
On another note, I recently read Block's latest Scudder, ALL
THE FLOWERS ARE DYING. Ever since I read CRIMSON JOY when I
was 14 or 15 I've been anti books with alternating story
lines with the hero taking a chapter or two alternating with
the serial killer's chapters in italics. I enjoy the Scudder
books because I like catching up with a character I like and
the alternating chapters take away from that. But Block is a
master so even though I have this personal quibble, this was
a nice read.
